Gaby Sanchez led the Florida Marlins in an offensive attack
against Daisuke Matsuzaka, beating the Boston Red Sox, 11-2. Sanchez belted a
two-run double in first inning, walked and scored his second run on a Matt
Dominguez double in the third and lined an RBI single in the sixth inning to
stake the Marlins to a 7-0 lead. Dewayne Wise collected three hits, including a
two-run homer in the second inning for Florida.
Anibal Sanchez (2-0), who the Marlins received from the Red Sox in the Josh
Beckett trade, held Boston
to just one hit over three innings to pick up the win. Matsuzaka (0-1) gave up
seven runs, five earned, on six hits and a pair of walks over three innings to
suffer the loss in his second start of the spring. Darnell McDonald doubled
home Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the sixth inning and Yamaico Navarro hit a solo
home run in the seventh for the Red Sox.

While Matsuzaka was having difficulties in Fort
Myers, the second Boston
squad traveled to face the Baltimore Orioles. The two teams played 10 innings,
before calling it a 4-4 tie. Jose Iglesias and Oscar Tejeda each had three hits
to provide the offense for the Red Sox. Iglesias singled to score Drew Sutton
and Tejeda legged out a two-run triple to give Boston a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. Iglesias
hit a ninth-inning single and two batters later Tejeda drove him home with a
single to right field. Alfredo Aceves went three innings, allowing a run and two
hits, and Dennys Reyes retired all three batters he faced for the Red Sox.
Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and Jake Fox hit a game-tying
solo home run in the ninth inning for Baltimore.

Boston
topped last year’s AL Wild Card winning New York Yankees in their first meeting
of the spring. Oscar Tejeda drove in three runs to help to the Red Sox beat the
Yankees, 5-3. Tejeda lined a two-run triple down the right field line in the
seventh inning and knocked a run-scoring single up the middle in the ninth.
Jose Iglesias, Drew Sutton and Juan Carlos Linares all went 2-for-3 for the Red
Sox. The 26-year-old outfielder Linares,
who was signed by the Red Sox in July, 2010, is batting .667 in his first Spring
camp. Clay Buchholz pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and
striking out two, and Matt Albers struck out three over two perfect innings of
relief for Boston. Former Red Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon was sharp, recording
three shutout innings, but Boone Logan (0-1) was touched up for three runs,
retiring just two batters to suffer the loss for New York. Alex Rodriguez had two of the
Yankees seven hits.

The Boston Red Sox begin each spring with their annual
matches against Boston
area colleges. This year was unique in that they scheduled both games on the
same day. I can’t think of a better way to start the exhibition season than
playing two. Jose Iglesias, a shortstop prospect know for his glove, showed off
his bat in the second game of the doubleheader.

In the second game of the day, shortstop prospect Iglesias
scored twice and drove in three runs to lead the Red Sox to victory over the
Northeastern Huskies, 13-2. Iglesias notched a two-run single to highlight a
five-run fourth inning and lined a RBI single in a six-run sixth inning for the
Red Sox, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Peter Hissey legged out a run-scoring
triple and Che-Hsuan Lin, Boston’s
minor league defensive player of the year for 2010, drew a bases loaded walk
and drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Starting pitcher Kyle
Weiland allowed a run and two hits over two innings and Rich Hill (1-0) allowed
a hit and run in the fifth inning, picking up the win for the Red Sox

Ryan Maguire led the game off with a home run for
Northeastern, which managed four hits off Boston’s
pitching. Huskies starting pitcher J.T. Ross yielded just one hit and one walk
over two innings.
